The Story of Tardis - Spiritile #13

May 11th 2023

Did you know that TARDIS - Spiritile #13 is enshrouded in mystery? One day, back in 2013, it mysteriously appeared on Houston’s website! He had no recollection of designing nor creating it!

Watch this video here to see how TARDIS came to be. >>>

Since that day, which happened to be Friday, the 13th, the TARDIS Spiritile - #13, has taken on four different iterations and quotations. As we get ready to bid farewell to this latest form of Tardis we thought we could take a look back on previously retired versions and their meanings.

Tardis - Edition 1 (8/8/13 - 4/28/14)

“It takes twenty years to make an overnight success.” - Eddie Cantor

Tardis - Edition 1

The original Tardis Tile was released in 2013 and the author of the quotation was, at the time, unknown. Tardis is a reference to the wildly popular British television program Dr Who. The Tardis is the name of the blue Police Phone Box which is actually a time machine/spaceship that the Dr. uses to travel through time and get to all the different locations in the universe.

This particular Tile does not feature a spaceship, rather a gold pocket watch draped on a red background, the time reads 5:20. The quotation wrapping the sides is a reminder of patience and honesty; it takes time and dedication to get where you’re going and no one gets there in an instant.

Tardis - Edition 2 (4/28/14 - 3/15/16)

Edition 2

“Time machines - some take us back, they’re called memories. Some take us forward, they’re called dreams.” - J.G. Wells

The second iteration of Tardis was a surprise release in 2014. This time the gold pocket watch lay on a green background and the time had changed to 12:03. In a nod to the Tardis in Dr. Who, this quotation calls us to recognize the time machines within us! Memories and dreams are both tools of time travel that can play significant roles in our stories. With the release of this Tile, the author of the quotation on the first version was also unveiled to be Eddie Cantor.

Tardis - Edition 3 (3/15/16 - 7/1/20)

“You know all those things you have always wanted to do? It’s time to go do them.” - E.J. Lamprey

Tardis - Edition 3

Tardis version 3 was released in 2016, taking on yet another form, this time entirely different. The gold pocket watch is gone and has been replaced with an ornate clock face with a rustic, neutral and blue background. The time now reads 4:00.

In his artist statement, Houston said that this Tile was “a call to make the most of our time now, and know that now is the best time to make all the things we want to do in life happen.” It is a constant reminder to live each day to its fullest and to do something every day to make your dreams come true.

Tardis - Edition 4 (3/19/20 - 5/12/23)

“Embark on the most daring of all endeavors, meet the future without fear and conquer the unknown.” - Ferdinand Magellan

Tardis transformed into its fourth edition in 2020. The clock was replaced with a sundial perched in the foreground of a sunny horizon. This time the exact time on the clock is unreadable, as the quotation encourages to look to the future. This was a timely release as it was right at the start of Covid, a period where all of us needed a reminder to meet the future with strength and courage.

In a more general sense, this fourth edition of Tardis is a more forward-thinking piece, giving us permission to find our true potential and rise to it as we move through a life that is unknowable and constantly changing.

As we say goodbye to another edition of the Tardis Tile, we can’t help but wonder what the next version might look like? What great feats might it inspire us to undertake and conquer? Until then, one of these is a worthy placeholder!
