"She is a celebration of life, a reminder that beauty never truly fades and that love never dies. Beneath the colors and flowers, lives the spirit of every woman that came before her, reminding us to honor yesterday, embrace today and live so beautifully that even time cannot erase our story." - Greg Creason
This piece is the sixth in Greg Creason’s “Sugar Skull Series” that was inspired by his experiences in culturally rich areas like California and New Orleans, where Mexican and artistic traditions thrive. The series showcases Creason’s deep admiration for “La Catrina,” an icon of Mexico's Day of the Dead created by artist José Guadalupe Posada in the early 1900s. Originally, La Catrina served as a satire, symbolizing that death is an equalizer, affecting all regardless of status—a reminder to embrace authenticity rather than aspire to false ideals. This appreciation of Mexican heritage and symbolism has driven Creason’s unique, colorful art style, visible in his sugar skull works, which fuse cultural homage with intricate, modern design.
