Houston Llew Spiritiles: The Complete Collector & Gift Guide

Meet the artist responsible for creating Spiritiles as well as the process involved in its manufacture.

Who Is Houston Llew?

The Giving Tree Gallery Houston
Houston Llew took a circuitous route to his life's work. After losing his job during the 2008 recession, Houston found himself shadowing master enamelist Zingaro, eventually earning the keys to a centuries-old technique that would become the foundation of Spiritiles. For months, Houston worked over a kiln on "nothing but ramen and beer," experimenting relentlessly until something clicked.

That spirit of experimentation never left him. Today, every Spiritile still reflects the same philosophy that drove him then: art should inspire, uplift, and connect us to the moments and people that matter most. Created in Charleston, South Carolina, Houston Llew Spiritiles have become beloved collectible art pieces known for their luminous enamel finish, emotional storytelling, and meaningful quotes wrapped around each piece. Collectors around the country display Spiritiles as reminders of love, adventure, friendship, hope, and the experiences that shape our lives.

In an exclusive interview with Houston Llew, the artist reflects on Spiritiles, storytelling, gratitude, and the emotional connection collectors have built with his work over the years.

What Are Spiritiles?

The Giving Tree Gallery Houston
Spiritiles are handcrafted mixed-media art tiles created using the ancient art of vitreous enamel. Each piece combines kiln-fired glass on copper with dimensional imagery and meaningful quotations designed to tell a story and evoke emotion. Unlike traditional wall art, Spiritiles are designed to feel deeply personal. Every tile pairs visual storytelling with carefully selected words, creating artwork that celebrates life's milestones, relationships, memories, and aspirations.

Every Spiritile is handmade in the USA and crafted to the same dimensions using the golden mean ratio, allowing tiles to display beautifully together in collections of any size.

How Spiritiles Are Made

Houston Llew's work is rooted in vitreous enameling, the centuries-old art of fusing glass to metal under intense heat in a kiln. Each Spiritile begins with a copper base layered with finely ground glass enamel. The piece is fired multiple times at extremely high temperatures, allowing the glass to permanently bond to the metal. This process creates the luminous depth, rich color, and distinctive texture Spiritiles are known for.

The delicate crackling visible in every Spiritile is intentional and unique to each firing; no two tiles are exactly alike. Houston refers to Spiritiles as "windows of the enlightened spirit," and the medium itself reflects that timeless quality.
Durable, dimensional, and rich with texture, Spiritiles bridge the gap between fine craftsmanship and emotional storytelling. Every tile is handcrafted in Houston's Charleston studio using American-sourced materials, including lead-free glass produced in the United States.

The Meaning Behind Spiritiles

The Giving Tree Gallery Houston
At their core, Spiritiles are about connection. What makes Houston Llew's artwork so collectible is the ability each tile has to capture a feeling, memory, or moment in life. The imagery draws you in, while the quote wrapped around the sides gives the piece its emotional resonance.

Emotional Reminders

For many collectors, Spiritiles become vital visual reminders of:

Family and loved ones
Places they've been
Dreams they are pursuing
Hardships they've overcome
The moments they never want to forget

This is why Spiritiles are often chosen as meaningful gifts. Whether celebrating a graduation, honoring a friendship, encouraging someone through change, or remembering a loved one, a Spiritile says something deeply personal in a way few gifts can.

Many collectors build walls of Spiritiles over time, creating a montage of their own story through art. Houston Llew Collections & Seasonal Releases

Houston typically releases four new Spiritile collections each year, with each seasonal release reflecting the spirit and emotion of that specific time of year. Each seasonal release typically introduces 3–6 new Spiritiles, along with occasional limited editions and special releases throughout the year.

Spring Collection: Themes of renewal, hope, growth, and fresh beginnings.

Summer Collection: Adventure, freedom, travel, and discovery.

Fall Collection: Change, reflection, transition, and evolution.

Winter Collection: Connection, gratitude, love, and reflection.

Holiday Spiritiles

Every November 1st, Houston releases a single limited-edition Holiday Spiritile available only through December 31st of that year. Once retired, the tile permanently joins the retired catalog and frequently becomes one of the most sought-after pieces among collectors.

Americana Spiritiles

Every few years, Houston Llew releases a special limited-edition Americana Spiritile celebrating the spirit of America through themes of freedom, exploration, resilience, and unity. Available only between Memorial Day and Labor Day, these highly anticipated seasonal releases have become collector favorites for their patriotic imagery and emotionally resonant quotes.
Americana Spiritiles
Past Americana Spiritiles have drawn inspiration from musicians, presidents, dreamers, and pioneers, reflecting both the independent spirit and shared optimism woven throughout American culture. Notable past releases have included:

• Our Land featuring a quote by Tom Petty
• Inheritance inspired by John F. Kennedy
• Apollo honoring NASA and innovation
• Ragged Spiritile #268, celebrating perseverance, courage, and the enduring American spirit

Because Americana Spiritiles are only available for a limited summer release window, retired editions often become especially collectible among longtime Houston Llew collectors.
Houston Llew Retires Spiritiles

Retired & Rare Spiritiles

One of the unique aspects of collecting Houston Llew Spiritiles is the retirement cycle. Active Spiritiles remain in production for a limited period before retiring permanently. Once a tile retires, production ends and availability becomes increasingly limited.

Because of this, retired Spiritiles often become highly collectible. Certain rare and retired tiles have sold through specialized galleries for significantly above their original retail price depending on demand and scarcity. Collectors frequently search for retired Spiritiles, rare Spiritiles, discontinued tiles, past holiday releases, and hard-to-find collector favorites. When a specific retired tile is out of stock, galleries are often able to help collectors locate rare pieces through their trusted network.

The Giving Tree Gallery Exclusives

The Giving Tree Gallery Exclusives
In addition to carrying new releases, retired Spiritiles, and seasonal collections, The Giving Tree Gallery previously collaborated with Houston on a series of exclusive Spiritiles inspired by the people, places, and stories that resonate deeply with collectors.

These limited-edition releases included destination and culture-inspired pieces connected to Florida's Gulf Coast lifestyle and the spirit of New Orleans; including Big Easy, one of the most beloved gallery exclusives inspired by the music, soul, and storytelling spirit of the city itself. While these exclusive Spiritiles are no longer in production, they remain highly sought after by longtime collectors and represent a special chapter in Houston Llew's artistic journey.

How to Display Spiritiles

Spiritiles are designed to be versatile and easy to display. Each tile can:

Hanging Instructions

For wall installation, use drywall screws with a quarter-inch lip for the frame to rest securely on. To make installation easier, many collectors choose to purchase a Spiritile hanging template to take the guesswork out of measuring and spacing larger wall arrangements. These templates easily accommodate layouts of 4 to 76 tiles.

Cleaning & Care

To clean Spiritiles, simply use a soft cloth and standard household glass cleaner.
